Professional teeth whitening treatment at Helix Dental, Mermaid Waters

About treatment results. Results vary from person to person and are not guaranteed — the outcome described may not be typical or achievable for you. The degree of shade change achievable with teeth whitening depends on your starting shade, the type of discolouration and your dental health, and some people experience temporary tooth sensitivity or gum irritation. A clinical assessment is required to determine whether any treatment is suitable for you.

Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.

The Treatment

What are my options for professional whitening?

At Helix Dental, we offer two professional teeth whitening options: in-chair whitening and take-home whitening kits. Both use a peroxide-based bleaching gel. The degree of shade change varies from person to person, and whitening is not suitable for everyone — your dentist will examine you first and explain the risks.

In-chair vs take-home

Two professional whitening options

Whitening can be carried out in the chair or at home with custom trays. Your dentist will assess which option, if either, may suit your situation.

In-Chair Whitening

At Helix Dental, we use the Philips Zoom! teeth whitening system for our in-chair treatments. This procedure involves applying a peroxide gel to your teeth, and during the appointment a special light may be used. The degree of shade change varies from person to person depending on your starting shade, the type of discolouration and your dental health, so your dentist will assess what may be achievable for you.

Take-Home Whitening Kits

We also provide professional take-home whitening kits. Your journey begins with an initial consultation where we take impressions of your teeth to create custom-made trays. You will receive these trays along with a supply of peroxide-based whitening gel. The trays should be worn for a specified period each day as directed by your dentist, with any change in shade typically becoming visible over a few weeks. How much change occurs varies between patients.

Our in-chair system

In-chair whitening in one appointment

Our in-chair whitening system at Helix Dental is carried out in a single appointment for patients looking to lighten the shade of their teeth. Located on the Gold Coast, our professional teeth whitening appointments typically take about 60 minutes.

Key features

For an additional fee, you can complement your in-chair whitening with a personalised at-home whitening kit to help maintain your results at your convenience. Offer terms apply.

Risks & limitations

Risks of teeth whitening

Teeth whitening is a cosmetic procedure and it carries risks. The most common are temporary tooth sensitivity during and after treatment, and irritation of the gums, lips or throat where the bleaching gel contacts soft tissue. Sensitivity is usually short-lived but can be significant for some people, and it may last longer with repeated or extended use.

Whitening only affects natural tooth structure. Existing fillings, crowns, bridges, veneers and bonding do not change colour, so they may no longer match after treatment and may need to be replaced at additional cost. Whitening does not work on every type of discolouration — deep or intrinsic staining, tetracycline staining, and marks caused by trauma or decay may respond little or not at all. How much the shade changes varies from person to person, results are not permanent, and they are not guaranteed.

Whitening is not recommended for everyone. Untreated decay, cracked teeth, exposed root surfaces, worn enamel and gum disease should be assessed and managed first, and whitening is generally not recommended during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. Your dentist will examine you and talk through the risks, the likely outcome, the costs and the alternatives before any treatment goes ahead. Further information about treatment risks is set out in our treatment disclaimer.

Good to know

Teeth whitening FAQs

No dental procedure is free of risk. Professional whitening is carried out after a dental examination, which is intended to identify issues such as decay, cracks, worn enamel or gum disease that may need to be addressed first. Common side effects include temporary tooth sensitivity and irritation of the gums or lips. Your dentist will explain the risks that apply to you before any treatment goes ahead.

How long whitening lasts varies depending on factors including your lifestyle habits (such as smoking or consuming staining foods and drinks), your oral hygiene, and the specific type of whitening treatment used. Typically the results of professional teeth whitening can last up to two years.

Professional teeth whitening should not damage your enamel when performed correctly. However, overuse or misuse of at-home whitening products can lead to enamel erosion and tooth sensitivity, which is why professional supervision is recommended.

Most people are good candidates for teeth whitening, but there are some exceptions. If you have extensive tooth decay or gum disease, these may need to be addressed first. Whitening may also not be recommended for pregnant or nursing mothers.

Yes, a variety of at-home whitening products are available, and we provide professional take-home kits with custom trays. Whitening provided through a dentist follows an examination of your teeth and gums and uses trays made to fit you. We can talk through which option, if any, may suit your situation.
