Inside the Helix Dental practice in Mermaid Waters

How it fits together

Three kinds of care, one practice

Most of what we do falls into three groups. General and preventive care is the foundation — regular check-ups and cleans, fillings, gum health and children’s dentistry — and it is where the majority of problems are caught while they are still small and less involved to treat. Restorative care steps in when a tooth has been damaged or lost, using crowns, bridges and implants to return normal function and shape. Cosmetic care addresses the appearance of a smile, from conservative options such as composite bonding and whitening through to porcelain veneers.

These categories overlap constantly in practice. A tooth that needs a crown for structural reasons is also a tooth that will be shade-matched to those beside it, and a cosmetic plan only begins once the gums and remaining teeth are healthy. That is why almost every treatment starts with an examination rather than a quote.

Your first visit

What to expect when you come in

A first appointment begins with a conversation about your general health, your medications and what has brought you in. From there your dentist examines the teeth, gums and soft tissues, checks how your bite comes together, and takes X-rays where there is a clinical reason for them. You will then be talked through what was found, what your options are, and what each one involves — including doing nothing for now, where that is reasonable.

Written estimates are provided before treatment begins, and all major health funds are accepted with HICAPS on-the-spot claiming, so you can see what is left to pay on the day. If you are not sure which page above describes what you need, a general dental appointment is the right starting point — a plan can be built from there.

Risks and suitability. Every dental treatment carries risks, and some — including veneers, crowns, bridges, implants and extractions — permanently alter or remove natural tooth structure. Cosmetic and orthodontic treatments have their own risks, and outcomes vary between individuals and are not guaranteed. The general risks, benefits and alternatives for the treatments listed on this page are set out in our treatment disclaimer and risk overview. Whether any treatment is suitable for you can only be determined by a registered dental practitioner after an examination, and you are entitled to seek a second opinion before proceeding.
