The Treatment
Clear aligners are a virtually invisible orthodontic treatment that straightens your teeth without traditional braces. They use a series of clear plastic aligners to gently move your teeth into their new, most ideal position.
Each set is worn for 1–2 weeks for 20–22 hours per day before you move on to the next set. The aligners are only removed when eating and drinking fluids other than water, and when brushing and flossing your teeth.
When beginning your clear aligner journey with our Mermaid Waters dentists, our seamless process is designed to have minimal disruption on your routine so you can live the life you love.
How it works
Your treatment is guided across a small number of considered appointments, supported by iTero 3D scanning and virtual monitoring.
Here, we'll get to know each other and find out how we can achieve your dream smile. Your clinician will take a close look at your teeth and discuss your specific goals and expectations. We'll take digital impressions using our iTero scanner, which shows you a 3D visualisation of your smile after treatment, and we can answer any questions you may have. Your digital scan is then sent away for final planning, where we plan and move your teeth on 3D digital software. This plan is used to fabricate your custom-made aligners, which are shipped to the practice, ready for you to begin.
You'll return in a couple of weeks to have your clear aligners fitted, and we will go through how to use your aligners and maintain them. We can then set up virtual monitoring software on your phone (either Invisalign Virtual Care or Dental Monitoring) that allows us to track the progress of your clear aligner journey without you needing to come in for frequent appointments. This software makes it possible for patients with busy lives, and those who live far away, to undergo clear aligner treatment with fewer appointments.
Don't live locally? No worries — we have many patients who live interstate. In most cases we will only need to review your treatment in the practice approximately every 3–4 months, thanks to our virtual monitoring software allowing us to track your progress remotely. As each smile is unique, treatment time differs between patients depending on how much tooth movement is required to achieve the final result. This can take as little as 4 months, or up to 18 months for more complex cases.
Compared with traditional braces, clear aligners are almost invisible, they can be removed so brushing and flossing are easier, and the flexible aligners are comfortable for all-day wear. There are circumstances where traditional braces may be a more suitable option — we can determine this during your initial consultation — though it is rare that a case cannot be successfully treated with clear aligners.
