The Treatment
Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, are the last set of permanent teeth to emerge in the mouth, typically appearing in the late teenage years or early adulthood. In many cases, there is not enough space in the mouth to accommodate these new teeth, leading to impaction, infection, gum disease, decay and other dental problems.
For these reasons, it is often recommended to have wisdom teeth removed. The procedure for wisdom tooth extraction is a common one and can usually be performed in the chair by one of our skilled dentists. And, if you're feeling a bit nervous about the procedure, sedation performed by an in-house anaesthetist is available, which many patients find helps them feel more relaxed. Whether extraction is the right option for you is something your dentist will assess and discuss with you.
In-house care
Many patients experience anxiety or fear when it comes to dental procedures, including wisdom tooth removal. To help these patients feel more relaxed and comfortable during the procedure, sedation performed by our in-house anaesthetist is something we offer at Helix Dental. An in-house anaesthetist is a licensed medical professional who specialises in administering and managing anaesthesia. They work closely with the dentist to help keep you as comfortable and relaxed as possible during the procedure. Local anaesthetic is used to numb the area, and sedation is available if you would like it — but no dental procedure can be guaranteed entirely pain-free, and some discomfort, swelling and tenderness during recovery is normal. Think of the anaesthetist as an extra set of hands looking after your comfort during treatment.

Good to know
Removing a wisdom tooth is a surgical procedure and it is irreversible, so it carries risks. These can include pain, swelling, bruising and bleeding, infection, dry socket, jaw stiffness or limited mouth opening, and injury to nearby nerves, which may cause altered sensation in the lip, chin or tongue. Sedation and anaesthesia carry their own risks.
Not every wisdom tooth needs to come out. Your dentist will examine you, review your x-rays and talk through the risks, the benefits and the alternatives — including leaving the tooth in place and monitoring it — before any treatment goes ahead.
