Crowns

A protective cover for damaged teeth

A crown is a cap-like structure that is placed over a damaged tooth to protect and strengthen it. Crowns can be made of various materials, including porcelain, ceramics, and metals. They are designed to look and function like a natural tooth, and can be used to treat a variety of dental problems, including:

Crowns are often used to treat tooth cracks as they provide a protective cover for the damaged tooth, preserving its structure and helping to reduce the risk of the tooth cracking or splitting further, which can result in loss of the tooth.

Dental cracks can result from various causes, including tooth decay, old large metal fillings, injury, and tooth grinding. They can range from minor surface cracks to severe cracks that extend into the root of the tooth. When left untreated, dental cracks can lead to pain, infection, and, as previously mentioned, tooth loss.

A crown acts as a cap that fits over the damaged tooth, covering and protecting it from further damage. Crowns can be made from a variety of materials, including porcelain, ceramic, and metal, and can be custom-fitted to match the colour, shape, and size of the surrounding teeth.

By covering the damaged tooth, a crown can help relieve pain, reduce the risk of infection, and restore proper bite and jaw alignment. Crowns can also improve the appearance of the affected tooth and help to preserve its natural function.

Bridges

A solution for missing teeth

A bridge is a dental appliance that is used to replace one or more missing teeth. Bridges are typically made of porcelain, ceramics, or metal and are attached to existing teeth or dental implants. They are a fixed, non-removable restoration that can help maintain the natural shape of the face and jaw and reduce shifting of the adjacent teeth.

Why crowns & bridges

The benefits of crowns and bridges

Crowns and bridges have many benefits, including:

How it works

The procedure

The process of getting a crown or bridge typically involves two visits to the dentist.

First Visit

The dentist will prepare the tooth and take impressions to create a custom-fit restoration.

Subsequent Visit

The final crown or bridge will be placed and adjusted as necessary.

Risks you should know about

Preparing a tooth for a crown or a conventional bridge involves irreversibly reshaping natural tooth structure, so the tooth will need a crown or bridge from then on. Possible risks include sensitivity to hot and cold, the nerve inside the tooth becoming inflamed or dying — which may then require root canal treatment or removal of the tooth — decay or gum disease developing around the edges of the restoration, and the restoration chipping, loosening or needing to be replaced over time.

Your dentist will examine your teeth, explain the risks, benefits and alternatives, and discuss them with you before any treatment begins.
