Custom-Fit Protection
If you play sport or enjoy physical activity, a mouth injury can affect your performance and lead to long-term dental problems. A custom-fitted mouthguard is one way to help reduce the risk of injury to your teeth and lips on the field.

The Treatment
If you're an athlete, a mouth injury can be a real setback. Not only can it affect your performance, but it can also lead to long-term dental problems. That's why mouthguards are a must-have for anyone who plays sports or enjoys physical activity.

Your Options
There are three main types of mouthguards: stock, boil-and-bite, and custom-fitted.
Why wear one
A mouthguard helps protect against injury, reducing the risk of dental problems like chipped or broken teeth, jaw fractures, and other injuries to your mouth.
A custom-fitted mouthguard is made from a scan of your own teeth, so it is designed to stay in place while you breathe, speak or yell on the field. Most people find a custom-fitted guard easier to wear than a stock or boil-and-bite one, though comfort varies from person to person.
A mouthguard helps to absorb some of the impact of knocks to the mouth, which may help reduce the risk of damage to your teeth, lips and jaw. A mouthguard is not designed to prevent concussion or other head injuries.
Good to know
You should wear a mouthguard during any sport or physical activity that carries a risk of injury to your mouth, like football, basketball, soccer, hockey, boxing, and other contact sports.
A mouthguard is a must-have for anyone who plays sports or enjoys physical activity. By helping to protect against injury and being comfortable to wear, a custom-fitted mouthguard is a sensible investment in your dental health that can pay off in the long run.
What a mouthguard can and cannot do. A mouthguard reduces the risk of injury to the teeth, lips and jaw — it does not remove that risk, and it is not designed to prevent concussion or other head injuries. Guards wear down, and a growing child's guard will need remaking as the adult teeth come through, so bring it to your check-ups to be assessed. Taking an impression or scan is a non-invasive process, but tell us beforehand if you have a strong gag reflex or any known allergy to dental materials. General risk information for our treatments is set out in our treatment disclaimer and risk overview.

There are three main types of mouthguards: stock, boil-and-bite, and custom-fitted. Stock mouthguards are pre-formed and ready to wear. Boil-and-bite mouthguards are heated and moulded to your teeth and are often found at sports stores or the pharmacy. Custom-fitted mouthguards are designed and made for you by a dental professional from an impression of your teeth and gums.

We take a digital impression of your teeth and gums — no more sticky, gooey impressions — and use this to fabricate a custom, layered mouthguard based on the colours, patterns and words you'd like to have on it.
